4 Reasons to Visit Knighton in the Summer

Summer is close and as the weather gets warmer and more pleasant, people find it ideal to travel and see the beauties of nature. Going to Knighton in Wales, one will be able to accomplish just that. Here we have an in-depth look at four main reasons why a visit to Knighton won’t leave you disappointed.

1. Great Walks

Offa's Dyke

An earthwork, apparently built by some Anglo-Saxon king in the mediaeval times, Offa’s Dyke has become one of the most popular tourist destinations near Knighton.

Around 50 years ago, they built a path to accompany the Dyke, with a trail of 177 miles long. The trail attracts thousands of tourists every year, who would enjoy the wonderful scenery, especially from the hills around it. The path could be very demanding as there are steep hills to climb and a rollercoaster ride to try, but those in love with nature will enjoy the challenge and the chance to be away from the buzz of city life.

The information centre of the Dyke in Knighton is a very useful place as many visitors will get a chance to familiarise themselves with Offa’s Dyke, have some coffee or tea, and ready themselves for the breathtaking adventure.

Glyndwr's Way

Taking its name from Owain Glyndŵr, a 15th-century Welsh prince, Glyndwr's Way is among the 16 official national trails in the UK and perhaps one of the most overlooked ones.

Glyndwr’s Way is around 139 miles, and it is well estimated that you need around 10 days to finish this trail, starting in Knighton and ending in Welshpool. It can be also completed as a loop back to Knighton, making it a 165-mile walk.

Along the way, you will come across several historical villages and settlements such as Felindre, Abbeycwmhir, and Dylife. You can also see Dyffryn Hall at Meifod, a Georgian manor house, formerly occupied by the Welsh politician, Clement Davies.

For those with less time to explore, the 27-mile section between Llanidloes and Machynlleth is often recommended. Walking or cycling on this mountain road gives you an opportunity to see some of the best panoramic views of the countryside you could ever experience.

2. Great Museums and Landmarks

Knighton Museum

To take a full grasp of the social history of the town, its culture and background, you will need to drop by Knighton Museum, a community-run museum reliant on donations.

There are numerous wonderful objects that are on display, and you can touch and feel them all. You will find lots of old photos, school books, and toys. Some artefacts have a direct association with the people of the community. The highlight of the museum is an old kitchen dating back to the 1950s, where you can study how the people of the day did their usual chores.

Knighton Museum is located on Broad Street, and being open from April to October makes it a great opportunity to visit during the summer with the family.

Berrington Hall

The 18th-century structure, known as Berrington Hall, is another important landmark you will get a chance to visit in Knighton. This neoclassical country house was designed by Henry Holland, the British architect, whose other notable works include Claremont House and Benham Park.

In the spring and summer of 2022, Berrington Hall is home to several important events. Apart from the Easter Egg hunt in April, this country house will host May Half Term Trail starting in May, in which you can explore the gardens and their sheer beauty with your kids. The surrounding landscape is spectacular and provides a great walking trail from the lakeside and back to the hall.

Another important event will be in July, and that is Hereford and Leominster Kite Festival. At this festival, everyone can bring their own kite and see a gathering of kites of all shapes and sizes in the sky.

3. Great Restaurants

Saffron

For lovers of Asian food and Indian cuisine, Saffron is the favourite choice to visit in Knighton.

For curry lovers, it has lots of excellent curry dishes, using a curry sauce with herbs and spices. For starters, it is hard to overlook the tandoori dishes that are extraordinarily tasty. They are made over charcoals in traditional ovens, keeping the original taste of meat.

What most customers like the most about the place is the food being in good portions and of great quality. The friendliness of the staff is also always cited as one of the main reasons to visit Saffron.

Located on 6 Bridge Street, it is open Thursday to Sunday from 6 pm to 11 pm with take-away service also available with its wholesome menu available online.

The Banc Knighton

Another must-eat-in restaurant in Knighton is the Banc Knighton, famous for its delicious steaks on Monday “Steak Nights.” Apart from the faultless meal you will indulge yourself in, the place also provides a lovely atmosphere you may use for all occasions.

The menu is exceptional with gluten-free options available as well for people with special needs. The burgers are out of this world, and the puddings are really wholesome.

The eatery is open for lunch and dinner, and you may also drop by to have some drinks. You may have your drinks at the bar, but there is also outdoor seating available.

4. A Great Hotel with Internet Cafe

The Knighton Hotel

The Knighton Hotel is an important landmark in its own right, with a record dating back to the 19th century. It is a Grade II Listed building, and both its interiors and exteriors contain objects of great historical interest.

It is also open to bookings, and you can book a room and stay several nights in a house steeped in history.

Moreover, in the newly opened internet cafe, you can have a snack like a blueberry muffin or rice cake, while trying a wide range of hot drinks. You will also have free access to the internet. The internet cafe is ideal for those looking for a place to work remotely in a peaceful atmosphere.
