7 Top Sites to Visit in Stromness during the Summer

Travelling to Orkney Island and towns like Stromness may look like a journey to the end of the world. 1. Skara Brae

For people interested in ancient history, Skara Brae is a must-visit. This excavated village, discovered in 1850, is known to be the best-preserved neolithic village in Northern Europe. 

You might find it fascinating to know that the dwellings are older than the great wall of china or even the Egyptian pyramids. This pre-historic settlement gives a lot of insight into the life of neolithic ancestors, their domestic life, and even their political structure.

The exhibition and the gift shop in the visitor centre give you extra opportunities to learn more about the place and its old inhabitants’ daily life. There is also a replica of one of the settlements, providing a hands-on experience of what life looked like 5 thousand years ago.

2. Ring of Brodgar

Another important sign of the neolithic period in the islands of Orkney can be seen in the Ring of Brodgar. The ancient ruins are full of mystical history and stunning beauty. It is the only major stone henge in the UK forming a complete circle. 

The site is around five miles from Stromness, and you can go there by car. You may need to walk a certain distance to get to the ring from the car park, but it is safe and undoubtedly worth it.

The unique atmosphere of the countryside with the sight of these spectacular stones is pure perfection for any visitor.

3. Yesnaby Cliffs

Yesnaby Cliffs and rocks are natural phenomena with a rough beauty you will never see anywhere else.

The sound of the sea crashing into cliffs and its mere sight is mesmerizing. There are hidden arches and ridges that the forceful waters find a way to hit and create stunning scenery.

As you walk on the coastline, you will also observe the sky and the sea and where they meet in the distance. However, you will have to be careful walking on the edges as the rocks might be slippy and the wind blowing.

Sometimes, you will be able to spot seabirds, including puffins and black guillemots. As for facilities, there is an excellent car park available with plenty of parking spaces, but the downside is that there is no toilet.

 

4. Ness of Brodgar

The archaeological excavations led to another discovery known as the Ness of Brodgar. This site is located near the Ring of Brodgar and, together with Skara Brae and Stones of Stenness, they form ‘the Heart of Neolithic Orkney.’ 

One of the most interesting facts about the site is that the excavations happen right before your eyes as the team of experts is constantly working around the area.

The information signs also help visitors a lot, and there will be tour guides available too.

Visiting in the summer, you might be able to find plenty of wildlife near the ness, as well. Birds such as dunlins and lapwings are only a sample of what you see there.

 

5. Pier Arts Centre

You may not expect a decent arts centre in a small town, but Pier Arts Centre is surprisingly good and is like a jewel in Stromness.

The arts centre was established in 1979. It includes collections of works by contemporary artists such as Barbara Hepworth, Ben Nicholson and Alfred Wallis. The building has plenty of open space to explore and study the range of arts at ease.

Initially built in the 17th century by Bishop George Graham, Skail House is a Manor house and a specially significant architectural building in Scottish history. The neolithic village of Skara Brae is on this property’s grounds, and while there, you can visit both sites.

There are gardens surrounding the house with grass and sheltered platforms. A sunny courtyard at the centre of the property is another major highlight.

A richly-filled gift shop is also situated on the grounds. You will find plenty of local products, jewellery and knitwear, which are done by local designers and suppliers.

 

7. Stromness Museum
